One poem, many voices (about 1900)
Around 1900 the German linguist and customs official Paul Georg von Möllendorff, then in Ningbo, had one text recorded again and again: Tao Yuanming's "Returning Home" (歸去來兮辭), the 5th-century poem of an official who gives up office for his fields. Each speaker recited it in his own language or dialect, and the cylinders were shown at the 1900 Paris Exposition as a survey of the languages of China. They are among the earliest recordings made in China.
The set was found in a Paris shop in the early 2000s, researched by Patrick Feaster and Xiaoshi Wei, and acquired by the UCSB Library in 2024. Which dialect is on which cylinder has not been published yet, so the readings are numbered by cylinder. The sound is very worn. This is a collection for curiosity and research rather than easy listening.
