Taiko, Near and Far
12 recordings, 40:11
The big drum belongs to Japanese festivals and shrines, but the ensemble taiko most people know, kumi-daiko, is a post-war creation that spread around the world.
This set starts at home with festival drums on Enoshima and in Nagasaki, and Nagasaki's dragon dance at the Kunchi festival. The dance came to the city with its Chinese community. It then crosses the Pacific to two North American groups who released their own recordings: Tampa Taiko live in Florida in 2011 and 2012, and Vancouver's Uzume Taiko, who compose for the ensemble.
Turn it up. Taiko is meant to be felt as much as heard.
