Lions, Dragons and New Year Drums
6 recordings, 37:38
At Chinese New Year the lion arrives with a drum, a gong and a pair of cymbals. In southern lion dance the drummer leads: every leap, shake and pause of the lion follows the drum.
The set begins in Sha Tin, Hong Kong, in 2008. A lion 'plucks the greens', taking a lettuce hung with a red envelope to bring a shop luck for the year. It travels on to New York's Chinatown in 2018 and a dragon dance in The Hague in 2017. It ends with a 1989 lecture and demonstration by a Brooklyn kung fu school, where the teachers explain the rhythms before they play them.
