Korea / Korean court and ritual music
Music for the Royal Ancestral Shrine
The music of the Joseon royal ancestral rite, played by the ensemble that inherited it from the court. This excerpt moves from Botaepyeong, which praises the civil virtues of the early kings and is danced with flute and feathered staff, to Jeongdaeeop, which honours their military deeds; the singer's slow ritual verses are in Classical Chinese, and each section is opened and closed by a call from the jipsa. UNESCO inscribed the rite and its music on its list of intangible heritage, first proclaimed in 2001.
