수제천 壽齊天
Korea / Korean court and ritual music
Long Life, Immeasurable as the Heavens
One of the best-known pieces of Korean court music, whose old name is Jeongeup. The pulse is very slow and irregular, so the players move by shared breath and by the janggu's patterns rather than a steady beat; after each piri phrase the other winds and strings carry the line on, a linking passage called yeoneum. It once accompanied royal processions and today is played on its own or to accompany Cheoyongmu, the dance of Cheoyong.
