Songs from the Other Side of the Border
A suite in the civil (wen) style of pipa music: lyrical, inward, with sliding and bent notes in place of battle sounds. It is linked with Wang Zhaojun, the Han palace lady sent beyond the northern frontier to marry a Xiongnu ruler, longing for home. Short tunes in an 1819 pipa collection grew into this suite in Li Fangyuan's collection of 1895. From Liu Fang's album The Soul of Pipa, Vol. 1 (2001).
