劉芳

Pípá, Gǔzhēng

Liu Fang was born in Kunming, Yunnan. She began the pipa at six and gave her first solo concert at nine. At the Shanghai Conservatory of Music she widened her repertoire and took up the guzheng as well.

At 22 she moved to Canada, and she lives in Montreal. In 2001 the Canada Council for the Arts gave her its Future Generation Millennium Prize, and her album Le son de soie won a grand prize of the Académie Charles Cros. Her own label, Philmultic, has released her pipa trilogy The Soul of Pipa (2001–2006) and the guzheng album Emerging Lotus (2005), alongside duos with musicians from other traditions.

On Kotone she shares one guzheng piece and two pipa pieces chosen as a pair: one in the martial style, one in the civil style.

Shared with Kotone by the artist.
