番薯厝建醮歌仔戲
Taiwanese opera at a jiao festival, Shuilin
Recorded by Wu Tsan-cheng on 4 November 2022 in Fanshucuo, Shuilin Township, Yunlin, during a jiao (建醮), the great Taoist rite of community renewal, when opera is staged for the gods. Gezaixi grew out of Hokkien folk song in early-20th-century Yilan and is sung in Taiwanese; outdoor performances on temporary stages remain part of temple festivals across Taiwan.
