Imperial court music

The orchestral and dance music of the Japanese imperial court, assembled from Tang Chinese, Korean and native Japanese sources and fixed in form by the Heian period. It is still performed by the Music Department of the Imperial Household Agency. Its sound is built from sustained shō chords, the reedy hichiriki melody and the ryūteki flute over sparse percussion.
