Not all traditional music happens on a stage. In Chinese cities, retired amateurs gather in the parks every morning to play erhu, sing opera and drum, and buskers carry the erhu from highway service areas to New York's High Line.
These field recordings were made by travellers and sound-mappers with handheld recorders, and they keep the surroundings in: footsteps, wind, conversation, a village on a summer evening. We include them for the sense of music as part of daily life, not as studio documents. Wu Tsan-cheng's binaural recordings from Shanghai parks are best on headphones.
The set moves from Shanghai and Beijing parks to Hong Kong, a Taiwanese service area and Manhattan. It then reaches village opera stages on Pingtan island in Fujian and in Henan, and ends with a sanshin player on Miyako island in Okinawa.
