洗馬科
Washing the Horses
A fast, difficult piece for four suona over drum, gongs and cymbals, the sound of a beiguan band at full tilt. Lichunyuan, founded in Changhua in the early 19th century, is one of the oldest beiguan clubs in Taiwan; its late teacher Li Jianghan arranged this piece from a Peking-opera wind tune, and it also accompanies the horse-washing scene in the opera Zou San Guan. The lead drummer steers the band with short signals on the tonggu, so every change of pattern has to land together.
