遊龍戲鳳

China / Peking opera

The Wandering Dragon Toys with the Phoenix (part 1 of 12)

The opening of a complete performance of the opera about the Zhengde emperor flirting with a tavern girl, recorded in Shanghai in September 1901 by the anthropologist Berthold Laufer. He hired a troupe of actresses and ran two phonographs at once, one for the singers and one for the four-piece band; the paired cylinders have been synchronised into an accidental early stereo recording.
