京劇
Peking opera
The theatre that took shape in Beijing in the 19th century from Anhui and Hubei troupes, combining singing, speech, mime and acrobatics. Its music rests on two melodic systems, xipi and erhuang, carried by the jinghu fiddle and a percussion section that marks every movement. Roles are stylised types: laosheng (older men), dan (women), jing (painted faces) and chou (clowns).
