Peking Opera Arias, Sung Today
These recordings were made in Beijing in 2017 by students and teachers at the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts and other institutions, for a research corpus on jingju singing. Some are sung with jinghu accompaniment mixed in; others are completely unaccompanied, which makes them an unusually clear window on the vocal art itself.
The selection covers the main role types. Song Ruoxuan sings the dan (female) arias from 'Farewell My Concubine' and 'The Drunken Concubine', both made famous by Mei Lanfang. Tian Hao sings two laosheng standards, Zhuge Liang on the city wall and the homesick general of 'Si Lang Tan Mu'. Shao Yakun takes the booming jing role of Judge Bao. Sun Yuzhu sings Cheng Yanqiu's 'Unicorn Purse'.
