Japan / Solo shakuhachi repertoire

Empty Bell

One of the three oldest pieces of the shakuhachi's solo repertoire, with Kokū and Mukaiji. Tradition traces it to the Chinese Zen monk Puhua (Fuke), who walked the streets ringing a hand bell, and to a disciple who copied the sound of that bell on a flute; the Fuke monks of Japan took his name. The story is legend, but the piece is treated with special reverence. Long tones, each shaped by a single breath. From Riley Lee's album Deep Night (2025).
