Japan / Solo shakuhachi repertoire

Mountains and Valleys

A classical honkyoku. Several different pieces share the name Sanya, also written 三谷, 'three valleys', which is often explained by a melody that rises to a climax three times and each time falls back into quiet. The longest of the three pieces Kakizakai Kaoru chose for Kotone.
