Solo shakuhachi repertoire
The 'original pieces' of the shakuhachi: solo works first associated with the mendicant Fuke Zen monks of the Edo period, who played as a spiritual discipline. Later schools such as Kinko-ryū and Tozan-ryū codified and extended the repertoire. The music is built from long breaths, shaded pitches and silence.
