Cranes Nesting

Cranes nesting and raising their young, until the chicks fly and the parents grow old. Many regional versions of the piece exist, and its flutter-tongued trills and rising cries are among the most vivid sounds in honkyoku. This is the version of Riley Lee's teacher Sakai Chikuhō II, played here as a duet for two shakuhachi. From the album Nesting of the Cranes (2004).
